Building Milk Supply--Baby latched to breast with good suck at least 8 times
in 24hr, so that means in the early weeks if its been 3 hours, time to wake baby for feeding.
Amount of Milk Made--starts with teaspoon and increases to ounces over time
If Baby Not Nursing--Must empty by hand expression or pumping and baby must be fed, at least 8 times in 24 hours.
Feeding Patterns-- Changes frequently--baby may want to eat anywhere from one to three hours between feedings around the clock.
Signs that baby may be ready to nurse--hands to mouth, squirmy, moving head side to side---much easier with baby awake and calm--see wake up/calm down.
Position--baby tummy to mommy
Pillow--next to Mom's body and in her lap to support baby at level of breasts
Hug--hug baby close with arm, hug in baby hiney and support at shoulders
Hand-Placement--Hand in U shape and compress together behind areola(brown around nipple) to help nipple stand out.
Latch--Touch under baby's nose with nipple, Wait for wide open mouth, Nipple on top of baby's tongue.
Chin-- baby's chin compressing into breast
Suck--good consistent suck pattern---if not sucking, gentle wake up, if still no sucking then break suction and switch to other breast.
Burping Baby--Gentle pat on upper back for a minute--may not get a burp but will help in between breasts to wake baby.
Sleepy--gentle wake up--back rub, foot rub, unbundle,
Fussy--calm down--stand up with baby and gentle rocking motion
Gassy--burp baby, express milk for baby to taste and start digestive motion
Poop--day 4--yellow poop---2 or more
Weight--baby loses weight and starts to regain about an ounce a day on day 6
Engorgement--avoid by frequent feeding or pumping--at least every three hours-----comfort measure for full breasts, warm compresses
Sore Nipples--Avoid by keeping baby close, chin to breast, dab of lanolin on nipple
Diet--good basic diet, moderation, prenatal vitamin

Nursing Bra--sleep type nursing bras first few weeks
Storage of expressed milk--Remember the number 5----5 hours room temp,
5 days refrigerator, 5 months freezer on refrigerator. Warm in cup of hot water--no microwave.
